| find us | Galston travelled to Tarbolton for the second time in three weeks on Cup duty, and again had to come from behind to win the match. This Walker & Templeton cup match was a bad tempered affair with the visitors winning by the odd goal in 5, with the referee trying his best to spoil what could have been a good game. Galston got off to the best possible start when they went one-nil up in the 12th minute when Miller's corner floated in at the back post, a deserved lead for the visitors. However, Tarbolton got an equaliser 7 minutes later when the referee inexplicably pointed to the penalty spot when a cross was played against Butcher's arm from point blank range and worse was to follow when the defender was booked! The home team then took the lead just before the half hour mark with an excellent strike from the right hand side of the box, flying past keeper Moore into the far post. The other flash point came 5 minutes later when there was an off-the-ball incident between Parris and a Tarbolton defender. The rest of the half was played out in a bad-tempered manner as the referee failed to control the match. Galston again started the second half strongly and were awarded with an equaliser within three minutes of the restart when Gemmell headed in at the near post from a Miller corner. They took the lead midway through the second half after a cross from the left was not cleared by the home defence, and Gemmell reacted quickest inside the 6 yard box to stab the ball home. Tarbolton then pushed everyone forward in the hope of snatching a draw but the Galston defence held out until the end. The visitors suffered an injury blow in the dying minutes as Butcher challenged in the middle of the park and injured his knee again in only his second game back. Keeper Moore made a brilliant save to allow Galston to hold on to the draw when a Tarbolton midfielder's long range shot looked to be heading into the top corner of the net. Man of the match went to Craig Moore in his sweeper role, with Numpty going to Wardrop for his wrong time, wrong place fiasco! |

| oct & nov | 20-Sep-08 | League | Mauchline United | 1 | v | 5 | Galston United | Referee | 4/10 | team sheet | ||||||||||
| aug & sep | A depleted Galston squad travelled to play against a Mauchline team struggling in the league so far this season, and left with all 3 points in a well deserved victory. United were without 9 players through injury and suspension, but still managed a fine 5 - 1 victory. Galston started the better of the two teams and should have been three or four goals up by half time, but a combination of poor finishing and bad refereeing mean the teams were level after 45 minutes. Galston took the lead just after the quarter of an hour mark when a cross from the right was flicked on by Duffy and volleyed home at the back post by Denim. Galston had two penalty claims denied in the first half hour when first Gemmell was fouled in the box, and later his cross seemed to strike the arm of the Mauchline defender. Galston also missed chances with Calder's header at the back post, and then Jordan shooting over the bar following a flowing move. Mauchline had only two chances in the first half, both from corners. The first of these dropped to a midfielder at the back post and his volley was well saved by keeper Moore. The home team got their equaliser on the stroke of half time when their striker headed home from close range with some slack marking in the box. The visitors stepped up in the second half and scored three goals in 7 minutes just after the hour mark, when Calder ran the length of the park and crossed from the right, and the ball was knocked into his own net by a Mauchline defender. Denim then got his second of the game, rising unchallenged in the box to head home from a free kick, and then Parris finished from close range after two other United players had missed golden opportunities. In between these three goals, Mauchline were reduced to ten men when their left back was sent off for his second bookable offence. Galston finished off the scoring with ten minutes remaining, when substitute McLeish turned well just outside the box and rifled a shot low into the bottom corner of the net. This capped off a fine performance from the visitors and a strong victory. Man of the match went to Butcher for an excellent display on his return from injury. Numpty again went to Parris for his remarks following a head knock. Idiot |

| 06-Sep-08 | Ayshire Cup | Tarbolton Amateurs | 1 | v | 3 | Galston United | Referee | 5/10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
United travelled to Tarbolton in a potential banana skin in the first round of the Ayrshire Cup, and had to come from behind to see past first-division Tarbolton to set up a Second Round tie away to Girdle Toll. Galston started the game well, playing up the slope and into the wind in the first half, and were playing the better football of the two teams. They created a few chances with English and Gemmell combining well with the latter volleying just past the post. The home team managed to restrict their Premier League opponents to shots from outside the area through a very crowded penalty box, and United's best chances came from set pieces with some good delivery into the box. Tarbolton took the lead with 7 minutes of the first half remaining following some poor defending from the visitors, and when the ball fell to the advancing midfielder just outside the area, he finished well. Tarbolton could have doubled their lead before half time when a poor clearance from keeper Moore landed at the feet of the striker, but the keeper redeemed himself with a fine save. Galston performed much better in the second half and managed to turn their possession into some clear chances. A change of formation on the hour mark seemed to do the trick as they pushed more men forward in search of an equaliser. This arrived within 4 minutes of the change when Wardrop smashed the ball home from 12 yards when the home team failed to clear. Galston got their noses in front 9 minutes later under similar circumstances as Gemmell reacted quickest at the back post to knock the ball home, and they should have extended their lead further when Jordan snatched at his shot with the goal gaping. United finally put the tie to bed with ten minutes remaining when Miller volleyed home from the edge of the box, again as the home team failed to deal with the Galston attack. A good victory for Galston in a well-fought match. Man of the Match went to Gemmell for his work rate and goal, with Numpty going to Smith. |

| 30-Aug-08 | League | Dean Thistle | 1 | v | 1 | Galston United | A Monkhouse | 7/10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
Galston dropped two vital points in their league campaign at Dean Thistle in a very poor match. The home team have been struggling of late, losing eleven goals in their last two home league games, however United were not on form on the day and could not capitalise on this through some poor finishing and a lack of composure in front of goal. There was not much football played in the first half with both teams paying the ball forward quickly, but the defences were coping well with everything being thrown at them. The only real chance of the first half fell to the visitors, a breakaway down the right hand side and a good cross straight on to the head of Parris, but his effort at the back post was straight at the Dean goalkeeper and the chance was gone. Dean took the lead within two minutes of the second half when the referee awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal on the right hand side. The Thistle striker's free kick was curled into the top corner leaving the Galston keeper absolutely no chance. Galston created some good chances in the second half but never forced the Dean keeper into any saves while at the other end, the Galston keeper had three fine saves in one-on-one situations. Galston were awarded a penalty when Wardrop's run into the box was halted by the Dean defender, and the Galston midfielder picked himself up for the kick, but it was saved by the home keeper. The equaliser finally came with 5 minutes to go when a cross into the box was headed goalwards by Miller and the bounce deceived the keeper. United then looked to have snatched a winner 2 minutes later when Smith headed home from a corner, however the referee adjudged the centre-half to have fouled the Dean Thistle defender and the goal was disallowed. The draw was the fair result in the end as Galston never made the most of their chances, but their keeper kept them in the match with some fine saves. Man of the Match goes to keeper Black, with Wardrop getting the Numpty award for his penalty miss. |

| 27-Aug-08 | League | Galston United | 3 | v | 1 | Hurlford Thistle | D Rorison | 8/10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
United secured a deserved home victory against local rivals Hurlford Thistle in an exciting midweek fixture. Galston were two-nil up within the first twenty minutes of the match. Firstly, Parris drove into the box in the 16th minute and when his shot rebounded off the post, Wardrop reacted quickest to slide the ball past the defenders and into the net. The lead was doubled 4 minutes later when Duffy chased down a passback to the visitors Goalkeeper and dispossessed him of the ball before passing into an empty net. The remainder of the first half was played out in the middle of the park with neither team creating many clear cut chances. Galston seemed to be in control of the game and were happy to sit on their lead going into half time 2 goals to the good. The second half continued in the same form, with the United midfield winning the battle, and the defence holding out under some pressure from the visitors, and they seemed to have secured all three points when Duffy doubled his tally for the game when his shot from the right hand side of the box found it's way into the net through a very busy goal mouth. Hurlford then went through their best period of the match and got a goal back with 15 minutes to go when their striker was unmarked in the box and headed home from a corner. They then threw everything forward to try and get something out of the game, with Galston temporarily reduced to ten-men as Parris was struggling and all 3 substitutes had been made, but the home defence were resolute and held out for a good three points. Man of the Match went to Wardrop for an excellent battling midfield display, and the Numpty again goes to Parris for his 15 minute dying swan act as he developed cramp at the end of the match. Ridiculous. |

| 18-Aug-08 | League | Knockentiber | 3 | v | 2 | Galston United | Referee | 8/10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
United traveled to local rivals Knockentiber for their first midweek clash of the season, but lost out in a 5-goal thriller. The match was fairly even, although Tiber were three goals up in 50 minutes thanks to some poor defending from Galston when first their midfielder's free-kick bounced over goalkeeper Moore on 30 minutes, and then poor marking in the box 5 minutes later at a Tiber corner resulted in striker Robertson volleying home from 12 yards. Worse was to follow in the second half when the home team's striker was allowed to run from the halfway line unchallenged, firstly skipping past McCallion as he slipped on the turf, and then beating Smith before passing the ball into the corner of the net. United had not played well up until that point, but a double substitution was to lift the visitors and make for an interesting last half hour. United had the best of the match for this period, and deservedly got a goal back when some good work by Moore down the right resulted in a cross slammed home by Jordan, with 13 minutes to play. United got another goal 5 minutes later when Moore chased a ball into the box, and as the home defence hesitated, he slid the ball past the keeper. United then went looking for the equaliser, as Tiber replaced a striker for a defender to hold on to their lead in the dying minutes of the match. Galston were then reduced to ten men as Tiber hit them on the break; Wardrop chased back and tugged at the striker's jersey, the referee waved play on and when the striker entered the box, Wardrop tackled well. However, the referee pulled the play back for the earlier infringement and Wardrop was sent packing as the last defender. A game of two halves, but too little too late for United with Craig Moore winning Man of the Match. |

| 16-Aug-08 | League | Galston United | 3 | v | 1 | Clark Drive | Jim Brown | 9 / 10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
Galston United got their league campaign off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win against Clark Drive. United started the brighter of the two teams and looked in control of the match, with the visitors missing some key players through suspension. The home team took the lead inside twenty minutes when a cross across the six yard box was guided into the net by Moore. Shortly after this, United lost a key man when Gemmell went off injured to be replaced by Duffy. The other major highlight of the first half was an excellent save by keeper Moore as the Clark Drive player's shot from outside the box looked to be heading into the top corner. United managed to stifle Clark Drive and they had very few chances in the first half, although United did not create many clear-cut chances either. Half-time and 1 - 0 to the home team. United lost another player to injury at the start of the second half as Barrowman injured himself while making a challenge, to be replaced by Calder. Clark Drive then had their best period of the game, again forcing the Galston keeper into some fine saves, although many of these were from long range shots. United seemed to have clinched the game with fifteen minutes to go when good work down the right ended in a cross which Paris slammed into the net. However, Clark Drive then got a goal back with only 9 minutes remaining when the substitute striker's chip rebounded off the crossbar and was knocked into the net by his team-mate. This could have made the last moments of the game nervous for the home team, but they restored their two-goal lead within a minute when Smith rose above the Clark Drive defence to head home Miller's corner. A deserved win for United, with Man of the Match going to keeper Moore for some outstanding saves. |
