| feb & mar | 24-Mar-09 | League | Hurlford Thistle | 2 | v | 1 | Galston United | team sheet | |||||||||||
| dec & jan | Galston travelled to Cumnock for a midweek fixture against local rivals Hurlford Thistle, and lost out by the odd goal in three despite dominating for much of the match. Hurlford had the best of the opening period and were in front inside the first five minutes when their striker stooped to head home from a corner kick. They were causing Galston some problems for the first twenty minutes of the first half and doubled their lead in the 19th minute when a quick free kick caught the United defence napping and Black failed to hold the cross, and the ball was knocked home from 2 yards. Galston then started to get into the match as the midfield got to grips with their opponents and they started to make some of their own chances. They got one goal back ten minutes before half time when McPherson scored from long range following a poor clearance from the Thistle goalkeeper. This was a well deserved goal for Galston as the midfield were now starting to control the game in the difficult conditions. United had by far the better of the second half with Hurlford only managing a couple of breakaway attacks, but they could not get the equaliser their play deserved. They struck the woodwork twice and had what looked like a stone-wall penalty turned away as English advanced on goal and seemed to be brought down from behind as he prepared to shoot. Galston continued to make chances and were dominating the midfield battle, but they could not capitalise on their large amount of possession and Hurlford held on for the three points. Many thanks to Match Sponsors A:A Motors. Man of the Match went to Parris for another outstanding midfield display, although Barra and McPherson were both excellent as well. In fact, this was a brilliant team display with everyone putting in an excellent shift. Numpty has to go to Black again for the only slip of the match for the Hurlford second goal. |

| 21-Mar-09 | League | Galston United | 5 | v | 0 | Troon Amateurs | 8/10 | team sheet | |||||||||||
Galston's league campaign continued in good form as they played Troon Amateurs at home in a potential banana skin as the visitors are fighting for their Premier League survival, but United ran out worthy winners in a very one-sided contest. This was an emphatic victory for Galston and they could have scored more than the scoreline suggests. However it took Galston until the 24th minute to take the lead, when Jordan reacted quickest to a rebounded free kick to slam the ball home. Galston were playing some good football at this point as they were getting into their stride and it was no surprise when they doubled their lead on the half-hour mark when Denim finished well following a good move down the left hand side. This was also the source of the third goal when Denim rose unchallenged to head the ball into the corner of the net, as Miller again supplied the cross following some very fine play. The match was over as a contest by this point, as Troon offered very little going forward and did not trouble keeper Black during the first half. Galston added further to their lead within 7 minutes of the second half when Smith stooped to head home a corner. They then had several chances to increase this lead but were guilty of trying to be too elaborate and wasted several good opportunities. They did add one more goal in the last minute of the match as Jordan's header from a corner crashed against the bar, but Parris was on hand and his looping header sealed a good result for Galston. Many thanks to match sponsors Orchard Builders. Man of the match went to Denim for his two goals and all-round (ha ha) display, with Gudgie picking up the Numpty award for his poor kicking display, as voted by Ricky. |

| 14-Mar-09 | League | Glenburn MW | 1 | v | 5 | Galston United | J Laird | 8/10 | team sheet | ||||||||||
United had the chance to avenge their recent Walker & Templeton Cup defeat to Glenburn as they faced them in the League at Prestwick, and came from behind for the second week in succession to win by a four goal margin. The match was spoiled by the strong wind, although Galston seemed to handle the conditions much better than the home team. Galston went behind after only two minutes when a long ball caught the defence napping, and the Glenburn striker was on hand to chip the stranded keeper from outside the box. However it took Galston only six minutes to level when Jordan was put through on goal by Denim and he got to the ball before the Glenburn keeper to prod the ball home. Galston had several chances to take the lead in the first half but couldn't capitalise on their advantage. They finally took the lead 9 minutes into the second half as they used the wind to their advantage with a carbon copy of the first goal as Jordan doubled his tally for the game. The game was over as a contest ten minutes later when Gemmell was on hand to head home from a cross. Galston were well on top by this point and it was a matter of how many goals they would score as they created many chances, while at the same time stifling any Glenburn attacks. United added another couple of goals in the last ten minutes with Gemmell adding his second of the match from close range, and Jordan completing his hat-trick with a header from a free kick. Another fine league victory for Galston, many thanks to match sponsors Fenwick Building Services. Man of the Match went to Jordan for his hat-trick with Numpty this week going to Barra for his strong 5 minutes at the start of the game, although Ricky ran him close!! |

| 28-Feb-09 | Ayrshire Cup | Knockentiber | 4 | v | 3 | Galston United | J Laird | 8/10 | team sheet | ||||||||||
United travelled to Troon Juniors to play this match as the Knockentiber park was unplayable, and they lost out in extra time for the second week in succession, this time at the quarter final stage of the Ayrshire Cup. This was a very entertaining match between two very good teams and was fairly even throughout, with Galston having the bulk of the sustained pressure but unable to make this count in the shape of any goals. They found themselves a goal down on the quarter hour mark when the defence got caught ball watching, and Robertson's flick on from the edge of the box found Parker un-marked at the back post, and he volleyed past keeper Moore. United almost got back into it straight away but McPherson's shot was weak and was cleared off the line. Galston did equalise ten minutes later when Parris reacted quickest inside the box to send the ball home. Galston had their best spell of the match at the start of the second half , but it was against the run of play that Knockentiber went in front again, this time from the penalty spot following a rash challenge by Denim. However, Galston again continued to press and equalised soon after when a long free kick into the box was met by Parris and he headed home from 8 yards. The match continued to be played at a very good pace, with Galston winning much of the midfield battle but both defences struggling against the strikers. The game went into extra time and Galston had their best chance of the match when a quick throw in caught the home defence napping, but McPherson struggled to get to the ball into the box and shot wide. Knockentiber went in front for the third time when a ball into the box was struck towards the Galston goal, and sneaked below the Galston keeper. United equalised again, after only one minute when Knockentiber failed to clear a corner into the box and Moore nodded the ball into the corner of the net. The winner came in the second period of extra time when the Knockentiiber striker finished from inside the box following a breakaway from the home team. There proved to be no time for Galston to equalise again and Knockentiber advance to a semi-final tie against Hurlford. Many thanks to the match sponsor, D&S TPT Services. Man of the Match went to Parris (despite the award after the game; absurd) with keeper Moore getting Numpty for his third goal blunder. |

| 21-Feb-09 | West of Scotland Cup | Galston United | 0 | v | 1 | Clark Drive | J Nicholas | 4/10 | team sheet | ||||||||||
United crashed out of their second cup in two weeks after extra time in the West of Scotland Cup at the hands of local rivals Clark Drive, who advance to a sixth round tie against Colville Park. Clark Drive travelled to Galston following a run of good results and in a confident mood, although they were missing some key players for this match. They seemed content to sit in and play for the draw and this made it very difficult for Galston to break them down. The visitors played with only on man up front and this meant the game was played out in a very busy midfield, with chances very few and far between. Conditions didn't suit a good match as the park was very bumpy and the wind was doing it's best to spoil the game. Galston had the best of the possession in the first half but their chances were restricted to set pieces, as they used the wind to their advantage by putting some dangerous corners into the box. However, they could not make any of these count, and the half finished at 0 - 0. The second half was much the same, with Clark Drive unable to exert any pressure on the home defence. However, their defence was also holding strong and limiting Galston to very few clear cut chances. It took the visitors until the hour mark to get their first real shot at goal when a long range effort was well held by keeper Moore to make up for his poor clearance. Galston's best chance of the half fell to Duffy as he was found by a cross by Denim, but his lob over the advancing keeper didn't have enough power to make it to the goal. Final score was 0 - 0 and the game headed for extra time. United pushed forward in search of the winner, but were outdone just as the game looked as if it would have to be settled by penalties. A long thrown in from the right was flicked on at the near post and the un-marked midfielder looped his header over the stranded Moore to seal victory for Drive with only 4 minutes remaining. Many thanks to match sponsors Carleton Surfacing. Man of the Match went to Parris for an excellent display at centre-half with Numpty this week going to Duffy for his "simulation" in search of a penalty. |
