        L&M Surveys Trophy Final

Galston won the L&M Surveys Trophy with a single goal with their second victory over Glenburn in four days, to secure their first piece of silverware in 7 years. Galston could have scored more as they had the bulk of the play, but it took an excellent save from keeper Murdoch in the dying minutes to seal the win.

The match was played at Portland Park in Troon, home of Troon Juniors, on a very hot day with the bobbly surface not allowing for much flowing football as both teams struggled to get the ball down and play flowing, attacking football. The match was also interrupted by the referee as he stopped the play at every opportunity for the smallest of infringements.

United got their noses in front within ten minutes when English was adjudged to have been fouled in the box, although this looked like a harsh decision as the Glenburn player appeared to win the ball in a good tackle. Jordan took the spot kick as the Glenburn keeper had saved from Duffy three days earlier, and he almost repeated this feat but the ball squirmed below his body and over the line.

Galston had made the most possession in the opening spell but could not create many chances as again the Glenburn defence and midfield did their best to stifle the play. United had the chance to double their lead with another spot kick when Jordan turned two defenders in the box, and this time the referee made the correct decision in pointing to the spot when he was fouled. Jordan stepped up again, but blasted the ball well over the bar.

Glenburn were causing some problems from set plays as they tried to make their height advantage count, but Smith was winning everything in the air when called upon. Galston were defending well, having not lost a goal in the previous 4 matches of the competition and keen to keep that record intact.

The game swung in the last twenty minutes when Parris was harshly booked, and then given a second yellow when the Glenburn player took a quick free kick and kicked the ball against his legs. More poor refereeing. Glenburn then threw everything forward to get something out of the match and Galston re-shuffled the pack to hold on to their lead. Smith continued to dominate in the air and then came the save by Murdoch.

As the ball broke loose from a Glenburn corner, their striker struck the ball towards goal and the un-sighted keeper threw up a hand to send the ball over the bar. United held out for the remaining minutes of the match to win the Cup.

Man of the Match goes to McPherson although Smith was immense in defence with Jordan getting Numpty for his penalty miss.
